Tottenham v Sheffield United – Wednesday 21st January 2015

Wednesday night sees the Capital One Cup semi final between premiership club Spurs and league one’s Blades. In theory Spurs should batter them, but things are never straight forward in cup competitions and given Sheffield United’s past record in cup competition’s we can expect them to fight this out for the full 90 minutes.

Sheffield United have just demolished and embarassed Tottenham’s fellow premiership rivals Queen’s Park Rangers 3-0 in the FA CUP, and although QPR are not of the same calibre as Tottenham, they will not see this semi final game as a walk in the park.

Then we have the Blades impressive victories over West Ham and even 3rd place Southampton in the league cup so far. Clearly Sheffield United are somewhat of a cup specialist team.

Sheffield United have a really important week of football to play, with a game against League One rivals MK Dons which is vital to their campaign to score a play off position and then the following Saturday the FA CUP 4th round match against Preston.

Now we are in the semi final stages of the league cup, its a two leg affair and the Blades will really want to upset the home favourites, or at the very least not lose by a high margin and render the second leg hopeless. The Blades are in decent form with 3 wins and a draw in the last 5 games across all competitions with two of those games as mentioned against premiership clubs.

Tottenham haven’t been so hot with a recent defeat to relegation fighting Crystal palace, but let’s not forget the 8 goal thriller against Premiership title leaders Chelsea which was an incredible result for them. Spurs no doubt have the main hopes of Champions League football next season, but I think they will relish the opportunity to add a league cup or FA Cup silverware to the very bare trophy cabinet, which has only seen the League cup added this millenium.

So, in terms of betting as with all CUP games it’s incredibly tricky, but a few things come to mind with this fixture. I really can’t see Tottenham losing this one at home, but I can’t see them winning easy either given the Blades impeccible record in this competion. Given that it makes sense to give Sheffield United a head start with an asian handicap bet. I’d go for Sheffield United + 1.5, Odds 1.85. As long as Sheffield United don’t lose by anything more than 1 goal, this bet will come in. I also think it will be a tight game, so under 2.5 goals, Odds 2.25 @ Betfred. This bet is odds against, given the bare stats of Spurs getting a lot of goals in the League cup games. However we have seen Sheffield United hold both West Ham and Southampton to under 2.5 goal games, and I imagine similar tactics will take place in this match.
