Newcastle United play host to the second placed-Tottenham side on the last match day of the 2015/16 Premier League season. This clash at St. James’ Park on Sunday is a crucial must-win for both the teams, but for very different reasons.
Tottenham will be looking to finish at the second spot in the Premier League table, ahead of their North London rivals Arsenal, who are just two points behind them. Mauricio Pochettino’s men dropped points at White Hart Lane as Southampton beat them 1 – 2 on Sunday. The Saints came back from behind to clinch all three points at Tottenham’s home. Throughout the season, Spurs have dropped 20 points from winning positions, more than any other side in the English top flight.
Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle grabbed a point in the 0 – 0 draw at Aston Villa. The Toons are 18th in the league table, however, the 17th-placed Sunderland and 19th-placed Norwich have a game-in-hand. Newcastle’s fate isn’t in their own hands even if they beat Tottenham at the weekend, as they would require both Sunderland and Norwich sides to drop points in their remaining games.
Nothing other than three points will be enough for Newcastle to stand a chance of escaping relegation. However, Tottenham might marginally finish second with a draw if Arsenal win by a two goal margin or less.
Surprisingly, there is no difference in the current form of the potential runners-up and relegation-threatened side. Both the teams have won two and drawn three of their last six games in the Premier League. It will be an interesting fixture to look out for as the fate of other teams is connected to this contest.
Tottenham will do anything to finish ahead of North London rivals Arsenal, I think 2.3 is value against relegation fighting Newcastle who are surely down this season.
