Euro 2016 Preview & Tips: Portugal v Iceland – Group F

Portugal will kick off their Euro 2016 campaign against the minnows Iceland. The 2004 European championship runners-up meet the debutants in Saint Etienne on Tuesday, June 14.

Euro 2016 could very well be Cristiano Ronaldo’s last opportunity to win the Euros. The 31-year-old legend is still at the peak of his powers and can guide his team to glory. Portugal’s group consists of Iceland, Austria and Hungary. Being the most experience and talented team in Group F, Fernando Santos’s men can easily qualify from the group stage.

Iceland,on the other hand, will create history as they will be the smallest country to be seen at the European championship. Gylfi Sigurdsson is the biggest star in the Iceland line-up, while forward Kolbeinn Sigthorsson will supposedly be the attacking threat. Iceland are certainly the underdogs of Group F but they can do the unthinkable if they aim for the realistic runners-up spot in the group.

Portugal played Estonia in a warm up friendly match on June 8 and they thumped them 7 – 0 courtesy of goals from Danilo, Quaresma, Eder and Ronaldo. Iceland played Liechtenstein on June 6 and picked up a motivating 4 – 0 victory.

Portugal have had an upper hand in the previous head to head meetings between the two sides. They won 5 – 3 against Iceland in October 2011 following their first ever encounter in October 2010 which ended 3 – 1 win in favour of Portugal.

There will be a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks with the group stages of the tournament commencing this Friday.
