The reigning Premier League champions will play host to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Both the teams were genuine title contenders last season, but this time around they might have to satisfy their hunger for silverwares in other competitions.
Pellegrini, who is set to be replaced at the end of this campaign, has a good shot of ending his tenure with a trophy. The Citizens will face Liverpool in the final of the Capital One Cup which is scheduled on February 28th. However, in FA Cup and the Champions League, they still have many major obstacles in their way.
The Blues are currently 12th in the Premier League table but the turnaround in their form, since the departure of Jose Mourinho, has been quite impressive. Guus Hiddink led Chelsea has won five and lost none of their last 11 games in all competitions.
Man City won 4 – 0 at Aston Villa in the fourth round. Chelsea, on the other hand, defeated MK Dons 5 – 1 away from home. Chelsea were also brilliant in the 5 – 1 victory over Newcastle United in the last game week while Manchester City were beaten 2 – 1 by Tottenham Hotspur at home on Sunday.
The West London club Chelsea will travel to PSG for the midweek Champions League clash in Paris. Manchester City will take on Dynamo Kyiv next week and thus they’ll have more time to prepare for the fifth-round tie.
In their last six league matches, Chelsea have earned ten points with two wins and four draws. The Manchester Blues have won two, lost two and drawn two of their last six league fixtures. Based on their recent form, City are third in the league table in contrast to Chelsea who take up the tenth place.
According to the bookmakers, Chelsea are the favourites to win this tie at Stamford Bridge. However, the Sky Blues will be hoping to bounce back from the big blow at the weekend.
