Before the start of every Premier league season, we are led to believe that the upcoming season will be the best one so far and that we will witness something unprecedented. Last season definitely justified that statement, but maybe not in the way many expected. Against all possible odds, Leicester City won the title and sent a strong message to the so called top 4 that you must look out for the underdog now.
The 2016/2017 campaign will probably be one of the strongest competitions so far. There has never been a stronger contingent of football managers in the league, with Jurgen Klopp, Arsene Wenger and Mauricio Pochettino being joined by world greats in Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte. We must not rule out the winning boys from Leicester City, which sensationally won the title last season.
If we think about the potential winners for the upcoming season, we never had this many favourites and teams that realistically speaking are capable of cutting it at the top level. Statistically speaking, Manchester City will enter the 2016/2017 campaign as the number one favourite. With Pep Guardiola at its helm, we are looking forward to seeing what this manager can offer in the most competitive league in the world. By the end of August, we surely expect couple of new signings to emerge at Etihad Stadium, especially in midfield and defence.
Guardiola and Mourinho will face a new rivalry this season. After engaging in fierce rivalry while being managers of Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively, the duo will now be in charge of two Manchester clubs, adding fuel to the fire that is already there. Jose Mourinho already spent enormous amounts of money to wax this rocky Manchester United team and most notable signing is former PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimović, who at 34 will be given surely his last serious chance at a top club. Manchester United will have UEFA Europa League as a distraction, but that certainly won’t stop them competing heavily for the Premier league title.
While the focus is on the two Manchester clubs to shine this season, in the capital we have a pretty strong team contending for a return to the top of English football. Chelsea suffered a surprisingly bad season under Jose Mourinho and then Guss Hiddink, ending the campaign as the eight-placed team. Antonio Conte has now taken over and the tactically gifted Italian mastermind is set to compete for the Premier league title in a season where Chelsea won’t participate in Europe. Conte already signed young Belgian forward Michy Batshauyi, which will significantly be seen as a goalscoring improvement.
2015/2016 lesson taught us that no team should be underestimated, as Leicester City and Tottenham competed for the title up until the finish of the season. Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp looks really good and are slowly but carefully improving their squad, Tottenham Hotspurs is hungry for success after they narrowly missed out on the maiden Premier league title and Arsenal can also hang their heads for missing a great opportunity last season. But we doubt that a miracle will repeat itself and the title challenge will be between the Manchester clubs and Chelsea.
I think given the odds Chelsea is worth a bet at 13/2. You can take this bet each way to get a payout of a 1/3 if they finish second.
I also think Leicester wasn’t quite the miracle people think it was. They are a well organised decent hard to beat side. They won’t win again, but I think top 6 at odds of 15/8 looks a good bet.
