Match Preview & Tips: Hungary v Portugal – Group F

20 shots, one missed penalty and a barrage of criticism. This is Cristiano Ronaldo’s story so far at the Euro 2016. Portugal might bow out of the tournament, if they fail to beat Hungary in their last group game.

Portugal have earned two points after draws against Austria and Iceland from their first two games in Group F. Prior to the tournament in France, Group F seemed to be straightforward for Fernando Santos’s team. However, the minnows Iceland and Hungary have attained some very good results.

Portugal’s opponents on Wednesday, Hungary are assured of a place within top three in Group F, which makes their qualification to the knock out stage quite realistic. The Hungarians, who have acquired four points, can certainly go through as one of the four best third-placed teams at the group stage. The other teams in the group need to work hard on Wednesday.

Euro 2004 runners-up Portugal have an upper hand over Hungary when it comes to the previous head-to-head meetings between the national teams. Selecção have won seven of their last ten fixtures against the Hungarians while the remaining three have ended in a draw. Their last meeting was in 2010 World Cup’s qualifier in October 2009, where Portugal clinched a 3 – 0 victory.

If there is one thing that Cristiano Ronaldo has done in his entire career, then it is to perform in intense pressure. The Real Madrid stalwart couldn’t find the back of the net despite a very good display against Austria. It won’t be a big surprise if the 31-year-old scores a hat-trick to put Portugal in the knock out stages.

Hungary will play Portugal on Wednesday, June 22nd in Lyon.
